Leaves are ovate in shape, oppositely arranged along the stem. Flowers are small, 4-petalled, about 1 cm across, usually bloom in November or December and last around 4 weeks.
A short day plant, it requires at least 6 weeks of 14 hr nights to induce flowering. Flowers can be red, pink, dark pink, yellow or white, depending on hybrids. The colours of the flowers can be enhanced under bright sunlight. May be propagated using stem or leaf cuttings and those grown from cuttings grow faster and better than those from seeds.

Fittonia (nerve plant) is a genus of flowering plants in the acanthus family Acanthaceae.
They are spreading evergreen perennials growing 10–15 cm (4–6 in) tall. They bear lush green leaves with accented veins of white to deep pink and have a short fuzz covering their stems. Small buds may appear after a time where the stem splits into leaves. Flowers are small with a white to off-white colour. Plants are best kept in a moist area with mild sunlight and temperatures above 55 °F (13 °C), therefore in temperate areas they must be grown as houseplants.

Light: The caladium prefers indirect light or moderate shade indoors. The narrower the leaves, the greater the sun it can withstand.
Water: When leaves appear, keep the plant evenly moist. Never allow it to dry out. Keep the humidity as high as is practical.
Soil: A rich, well-drained potting mix is good for caladium.
Fertilizer: Fertilize the plant weekly during the growing season with liquid fertilizer or use slow-release pellets.
